SEMICON Taiwan 2026 officially kicked off today. Minister of Economic Affairs Kung Ming-Hsin was invited to attend the opening ceremony and served as the guest of honor for the ribbon-cutting of the USA Pavilion. Minister Kung joined Raymond Greene, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), and Bill Frauenhofer, Director of the U.S. Department of Commerce's CHIPS Program Office, at the pavilion's opening to announce that Taiwanese businesses are further expanding their investments in the United States. In his opening remarks, Minister Kung said the Taiwan-U.S. semiconductor partnership is growing closer, and expanding its footprint in the U.S. has become a vital strategic move for Taiwanese enterprises. Following a recent review by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Taiwanese firms have committed an additional US$20 billion in investment to the U.S.
SEMICON Taiwan 2026 is expected to feature over 1,300 participating companies and 4,300 exhibition booths. Industry leaders from home and abroad are gathering for a three-day forum to discuss the future of semiconductors. The event is projected to attract industry professionals from more than 65 countries, setting new records for both attendance and booth count. Demonstrating Taiwan's technological strength, the Industrial Development Administration (IDA) and the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT) of the MOEA, in collaboration with the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), jointly presented the "IDA Pavilion" and the "DoIT R&D Pavilion."
Beyond domestic industry players and government agencies, the USA Pavilion was co-organized for the third consecutive year by AIT and the American State Offices Association (ASOA). This year's USA Pavilion brings together 11 economic development organizations and American enterprises from states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, and Ohio, as well as the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Speaking at the USA Pavilion opening, Minister Kung pointed out that foreign direct investment (FDI) into Taiwan reached US$13.9 billion from January to July 2026 - a 78% year-on-year growth. Micron's US$7.5 billion debt-to-equity swap investment was the largest. Furthermore, NVIDIA's recent announcement of a US$3.5 billion investment in MediaTek underscores that international tech giants remain highly bullish on Taiwan's industrial development.
Meanwhile, momentum in Taiwanese companies investing in the U.S. continues to surge. Ahead of the SelectUSA summit in May this year, the MOEA conducted an assessment showing that 20 Taiwanese companies in the semiconductor and AI server sectors had announced US$35 billion in U.S. investments. Driven by continuously growing market orders, these companies committed an additional US$20 billion in investment within just a few short months. Looking ahead, in addition to expanding investments in AI and semiconductor servers, the scope of cooperation is set to extend to sectors such as biotechnology and natural gas. The Taiwan government is committed to providing full assistance to ensure the smooth implementation of these investment projects, deepening bilateral investment and industrial collaboration, and fostering mutual prosperity.
The MOEA emphasized that Taiwan looks forward to building an even closer partnership with the United States to reinforce mutually beneficial investments. The Ministry will continue to foster a sound investment environment to attract foreign businesses to Taiwan. At the same time, more Taiwanese enterprises are establishing a direct presence in the U.S. to stay close to end customers and expand market reach. By leveraging the complementary industrial strengths of both sides, Taiwan and the U.S. will jointly build a highly resilient global supply chain.
The MOEA reaffirmed that the government will continue to execute its established strategy to "Remain Rooted in Taiwan, Expand Globally, and Market to the World." Taiwan will work closely with trusted international allies to build a closer industrial network, unlocking more opportunities for sustainable industrial development.
